Can Yakima Tracks Work on Truck Cap and Roof

Question:

I have a 2015 F-150 with a 5.5 ft bed. I recently got a new SnugTop shell and a tent door that slides over the open tailgate and raised cap window. That’s all good to go, but I want to add roof rack tracks to accommodate an Alu Rack y Prime Designs for cargo of sleeping under the stars in the desert. I’m thinking that I’d like to have tracks on the cap and also the cab roof so I can slide the rack forward and not have it up on the back of the cap where I slide on the tailgate tent. So, my questions are “If the cab and cap are the same height is the 2 track per side option viable?” “ Is the cab roof stronger than the cap roof?” “Will the rivets from the track installation show through the carpeted ceiling of the cap or the headliner of the truck cab? I’m out in the desert a lot and like to go light and inexpensive when I can. I used to throw a small mattress on my old days Bakflip tonneau cover and don’t want to lose the star gazing now that I’ve gone to the cap. Thank you very much for any insight you can give me.

You can add the Yakima Tracks for Roof Racks, which come in 60" # Y01135, 54" # Y01127 or 42" # Y01126 to your 2015 Ford F-150 although I could not tell from the photo if there was a space between the truck cap and the roof of your truck. If there is a space between them you wouldn't want to install just the two tracks per side as that wouldn't be fully secure.

As for the rivets showing, they won't specifically, but the CapNuts in the hardware would show because you need to drill through the roof. You would also need two of the Landing Pad 1 # Y00221, four of the Yakima Control Towers # Y8890027 and crossbars like the Round 66" CrossBar for Yakima # Y8810025
