Is Converter Required to Install Trailer Wiring Harness on 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Question:
I have a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo. Trying to figure out how to direct wire without converter car has extra red wire for brake lights, so yellow, green, brown, red, and white. How do I wire this into a standard 4 wire with yellow, green, brown, and white?

Since your 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee features a separate wiring system (brake and turn signals sent along separate wires) a converter is required to combine these circuits to be compatible with standard trailer wiring. If you were to simply splice in 4-Way wiring to the factory wires on your Jeep the trailer lights would not function properly when connected. There is not a good way to wire up your Jeep for a trailer without a converter.
Please also note that certain vehicles, your Jeep Grand Cherokee included, have a more delicate factory wiring system that simply can't handle the extra amperage required to power additional lights on a trailer. So in your case a powered converter is actually required for two reasons, both to provide sufficient power to the trailer lights and to also combine those separate circuits.
If your Jeep doesn't have the factory tow package I highly recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118349. This custom harness is designed specifically for your Jeep and will install by simply plugging into factory ports behind the interior trim panels on the driver and passenger side. Once those connections are made you will just run the hot lead from the converter up to the battery.
This will provide you with a 4-Way connector to properly power a trailer's signal lights. I have attached the written instructions that you can check out as well.
