What If A Trailer's Tongue Weight Exceeds Capacity of Weight Distribution System
Question:
what happens if my weight distribution hitch says max 600lbs tongue weight and my actual tongue weight is 700lbs?

Expert Reply:
If the actual tongue weight of your trailer exceeds the 600 pound capacity of your weight distribution system then it essentially will be as if you don't have a system hooked up at all. The spring bars won't have the strength to properly distribute weight and also won't be much help in fighting sway on the highway. It's also important to note that any added cargo weight you have behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle counts towards your total tongue weight as well so it's likely that you are exceeding your system by more than just 100 pounds.
With a weight distribution system you want to make sure your total tongue weight falls comfortably within its operating range.
Many weight distribution systems can be upgraded (or downgraded) by simply swapping out the spring bars for higher or lower-rated units. If you can tell me what system you have I will be happy to see if this is possible and recommend the correct bars for your tongue weight.
