Yes, you will need to install a brake controller on your 2018 Chevrolet Traverse in order to activate electric brakes on a trailer. For a plug and play option, there are few better than the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180. The reason for this is because it uses a device most individuals are familiar with, their phone which also means you don't have to read a comprehensive manual and learn all the codes. If your phone dies while using the brake controller, the device will still function as normal.
If you don't already have a 7-way trailer connector on your Traverse, you will need to add one for which I recommend using the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118287 which is also plug and play. This brand has the most success with longevity of their wiring products.
I have attached an install video of the wiring harness and a review video of the brake controller for you as well.
