Recommended Towing Components for 2019 Honda CR-V EX and Pop Up Camper

Question:

We are purchasing a new CR-V this month and want to ask some questions about possibly towing a pop-up in the future. From what Ive seen online the maximum tow weight for the CR-V is 1500 lbs and the tongue weight is said to be 10 of that, or 150 lbs. Does this preclude us from ever towing a pop-up? Can anyone make specific recommendations for pop-up trailers that could be handled by a CR-V? Were definitely looking for a trainer with slide-out sleep areas on each end. Any help is very much appreciated!

A 2019 Honda CR-V EX does have the max towing capacity of 1,500 lbs. The tongue weight is not as precise as the recommendation is approximately 10% and the average trailer will have a tongue weight between 10-15%. So you can only tow 1,500 lbs but your tongue weight may be slightly more than 150 lbs without issue.

I recommend using the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Matte Black Finish - Class III - 2" # E98848 which will be a fraction of the OEM cost and will be stronger. Then for your wiring I recommend the T-One harness # 118741.

Then for a ball mount I recommend the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount # BWTS10035B to give you a 1-7/8 inch ball and 2 inch ball option as well as adjustability to tow level. Then you can use a hitch pin lock like # e98880 to secure your investment. This ball mount stores behind the shank when not in use for a clean look that also protects your shins.

There are pop up campers that will be light enough for your vehicle to tow. For instance the Livin'Lite QuickSilver 6.0, 8.0, 8.1 or 10.0 will be under that weight restriction when fully loaded. It may be difficult to find anything with slide outs in that weight capacity. The Jayco Jay Sport 8SD is another great option within that towing capacity.
