Expert Reply:
When hardwiring a trailer brake controller like the Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160 either a 20-amp or 30-amp circuit breaker will provide operating power for the controller itself.
The choice depends on whether the trailer has one braked axle (use the 20-amp value # PK54520) or if it has two or three braked axles (use a 30-amp breaker # PK54230). The breaker should be mounted on the firewall, reasonably close to the battery positive terminal. The copper-colored terminal on the breaker connects to the battery.
We do include a 40-amp breaker in our Brake Controller Install Kit # ETBC7 and this one is for the 12V auxiliary power circuit on the 7-way which can power devices on the trailer. This value circuit breaker is not for the brake controller.
