Question:

New question, will using a 2” receiver allow the tailgate of a Jeep Wrangler to clear the rack if there are no bikes on the rack?

It is possible to use an extender like the 7" Brophy # HE06 so that the Kuat NV 2.0 Base # BA22B clears the tire on your 2017 Jeep Wrangler but even with it clearing the spare tire you wouldn't have complete access to your rear hatch area. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack is 11-3/4" so just add 7" to that measurement to get an idea of where the bike rack will sit.

If rear hatch access is something that you are wanting/needing then we still have a solution for you. The Yakima BackSwing # Y02483 not only moves the bike rack at least 14 further out from the center of the hitch pin hole but it also features a swinging arm so that you can completely open your rear hatch without having to take your bikes and the NV 2.0 off of your Jeep.

I have attached a photo and a review video showing what this extender/bike rack combo looks like on a Jeep that is the same generation as what you have. In the second picture and the video you can see where we use the tilting function of the bike rack and we can barely get the door open.

Please note that with any extender, including the Yakima BackSwing, the weight capacity of your trailer hitch will be reduced by 50%.

Right off hand I am not sure of that but what I can tell you is that from the center of the hitch pin hole to the top of the closest part of the Kuat NV 2.0 Base # BA22B there is a 11-3/8" difference in height (see attached photo). If you go out and see what the difference in height is from the center of the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch to the bottom of your tailgate you will be able to determine if you can open the tailgate by just removing the bikes or not.
