Installing Trailer Brake Controller on 2018 Ford Transit T250 with Factory 7-Way

Question:

I have a Primus 90155 that I would like to install on a 2018 Ford T250 Cargo van. It has the tow package but no brake controller. Any help you can give would be awesome. Does my van have a plug under the dash etc. that makes it easy to hook up my controller?

There is not a factory brake controller plug-in port on your 2018 Ford Transit T250 so in order to install your existing Tekonsha Primus Brake Controller you will need to hardwire it in using the Wiring Kit # 5506. This kit will provide you with the power and ground wires for the brake controller along with the needed circuit breakers. The red wire from the brake controller will then need to be spliced to the cold side of the brake light switch on the Transit. This is the wire that only gets power with the brake pedal depressed (and no power with any other function). I recommend using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to determine the correct wire.

From there you will need to run a length of 10-gauge wire like # 10-1-1 (sold by the foot) from the brake output circuit of the controller (blue wire) to the brake output pin on the 7-Way connector.

I have attached a wiring diagram to assist.

If you are open to upgrading to a new brake controller, I highly recommend taking a look at the Curt Echo # C51180. This is really a perfect brake controller for your application because of its unique installation process that simply requires you to plug it directly into the Transit's 7-Way connector and pair it to your smartphone via a Bluetooth connection. It requires no hardwiring to the vehicle and also eliminates the need for a separate unit inside the cab of your Transit since your phone is what is used to adjust any settings or activate the manual override. The controller just requires that the 12V pin on the vehicle's 7-Way is active.

I have attached a short video demonstration on the Echo so you can get a closer look at how it installs and operates.
