Would Switching to a Leaf Spring with a Lower Weight Capacity Improve Ride of Boat Trailer
Question:
I bought a used boat and trailer recently. When towing it on less-than-smooth highways, I notice it bounces around a lot. The trailer has SP-220275 3500-lb leaf springs, and the package weight is around 2000 lbs. If I replace them with these e66SR 2500-lb springs, will I experience less bounciness?

Swapping out your 3500 lb leaf springs for the 2500 lb springs would improve your ride, IF (and only if) the weight of the boat, trailer, motor, gasoline, cooler, tackle boxes, more coolers, fishing poles and other gear stowed on it will not exceed the 2500 lb capacity of the springs. If the capacity is exceeded, you will actually experience a rougher ride as the trailer will bottom out. What is your axle rated for? If at all possible, you want to match the spring capacity to the capacity of the axle.
If you find you need to stay with the 3500 lb springs, try moving most of the gear in the boat up toward the front of the boat. You should notice an improvement in your ride quality.
