Weight Distribution and Sway Control, 2011 Toyota Sienna and Pole Tongue Trailer with Surge Brakes

Question:

I have a light car trailer 3000lbs with car on it with straight tongue and surge brakes which I have started towing with a Toyota Sienna. It needs a Weight distribution system as back of Sienna s several inches under trailer load and gear in back of Sienna. Is there a weight distribution system that will work with this combination of straight tongue and surge brakes. I have a CURT class III hitch with 2inch reciever and 2inch ball.

First, if you have an aluminum trailer frame, you will first need to consult the trailer manufacturer to make sure that it can be used with weight distribution. If you find that you can, you will need to start out with a pole tongue adapter, # RP58393.

The adapter bolts around the tongue and provides attachment points for weight distribution. You can then add a weight distribution system. I recommend going with a system rated for 250 to 400 pounds tongue weight. Tongue weight can be calculated by adding the trailer tongue weight to the weight of anything loaded in the Sienna behind the rear axle.

This pole tongue adapter can only be used with Reese Steadi-Flex sway control systems so I recommend Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System, # 66557. This system also comes with the shank so you will just need a properly sized ball like # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch diameter or # A-90 for a 2 inch diameter. I have also included a link to the installation details and a link to our FAQ on weight distribution.

Adding a weight distribution system will help with sag at the back of your 2011 Toyota Sienna but you would also benefit from some suspension enhancement. I recommend the Timbren system, # TTORSEN04. This system uses hollow rubber springs sit above the axle, helping to stabilize and level the vehicle while providing a more comfortable ride by absorbing road shock and improving roll stability. I have included a link to the installation details for you.

Finally, Toyota may require the use of an additional transmission cooler on your van. Consult the owners manual to be sure. If the van did not come with the towing package from the factory then you would need to add one. I recommend the Derale Cooler, # D13502. It is our most popular cooler. I have included some links to our FAQ articles on coolers for you.
