Recommended Bike Carrier Compatible with Two Firmstrong Cruiser Bikes
Question:
I have 2 Firmstrong Cruisers that I believe weigh about 41 lbs each. My question to you is what is the weak link in the bike rack that are the concern? This rack is in my price range but am worried about the weight limit and how accurate is that?

The Swagman XC 2-Bike Rack Platform Style for 1-1/4" and 2" Trailer Hitches # S64650 weakest link as you stated is the wheel hoops. They are not very durable even though they are tested and confirmed for certain weights for the manufacturer warranty specifications. The weight limit of 35 lbs per bike is very common for many racks like this one, but when racks are rated for higher weights they definitely raise those capacities as you definitely want a rack that can handle your bike weights under normal use. This particular rack will not meet your needs.
For your two Firmstrong Cruiser bikes I recommend going with a higher rated rack like the Hollywood Racks Trail Rider 2-Bike Rack - 1-1/4", 2" Hitch - Platform Style - Frame Mount # HR200Z. This rack is rated for 45 lbs per bike and is closer to your price range.
If you determine you want a more sturdy rack, then there will be a price difference but I recommend the Saris Freedom 2 Bike Platform Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # SA4412B. This will be compatible with your 41 lb bikes and will be compatible whether you have the wheel fenders or not. If you don't have fenders and prefer a wheel mount carrier, the Hollywood Racks TRS 2-Bike Platform Rack # HR3000 will work with bikes up to 50 lbs each.
