Does GVWR of Trailer Change Depending on Trailer Tire Size

Question:

I have a 28 foot tandem drop axle float on pontoon trailer with 12 inch wheels. The VIN placard calls out 3 different GVWRs based on wheel size. 4180 lbs on 12 inch C tires, 5260 LBS, 13 inch C tires, and 5320 LBS 14 inch D tires. This makes be believe that my absolute max GVWR is 5320 lbs with the correct tire rating. Im looking to avoid changing my rim size, but upgrade the tire load rating to a 12 inch radial with a D rating to maintain the low center of gravity and increase the GVWR on the 12 inch set up. my goal is to add a buffer into the GVWR to account for gear loaded within the boat. I also plan to do some highway driving which is my reasoning for radials. Would upgrading the tires to a higher load rating on 12 inch wheels increase the GVWR to the rating specified on the 4 tires? Or does the 12 inch rim have a factor to play in GVWR?

It is interesting that you have 3 different GVWRs on your trailer. I am thinking that this is referring to different OEM tire sizes so I believe you are correct that your max GVWR is 5,320 lbs. If this is the case (which it would be beneficial to verify this with the trailer manufacturer) then you simply need to upgrade the lowest rated component(s) on your trailer to increase your GVWR.

Since the highest rated load range D tire that is currently available has a max load of 1,220 lbs this means the most weight you could load is 4,880 lbs (4 x 1,220). Instead of a load range D I recommend going with a load range E which is found with the Aluminum Lynx Trailer Wheel - 12" x 4" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 - Silver # LH45FR and the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # AM10140. This tire and wheel is rated for 1,520 lbs at 80 psi. This means that all 4 tires will have a combined weight rating of 6,080 lbs which means your tires are no longer the least rated component on your trailer.

I have attached a review video of this tire/wheel combo for you to check out.
