Recommended Trailer Battery Charger Located on Trailer for Battery Bank with Solar Panels

Question:

Converting a utility trailer to a work trailer and how to get the trailer charged by the vehicle when not using solar panel. the answer was to mount the charger on the vehicle I needed to be able to mount the charger on the trailer because different Vehicles will be towing this so a vehicle melted one would not work. Is there a trailer mounted one that will work?

The Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger - Dual Input - DC to DC - 12V/24V - 25 Amp # 331-BCDC1225D is not only a vehicle side mounted charger. It can be mounted in a motorhome, but most of the time it is a trailer mounted charger that would need to be mounted on the trailer side to be close to your trailer battery bank connection.

The vehicle side of the 7-way will have a 12V power line at the 1 o'clock pin when facing the connector. This will provide 12V power to your trailer battery but only at whatever alternator amperage is not being used by the truck (this is normally about 2 to 4 amps). This Redarc BCDC charger # 331-BCDC1225D will boost that to 25 amps to charge your trailer battery bank instead of just maintaining the battery charge. I recommend mounting it inside your battery box if there is room.

For best function a thicker gauge wire is ideal. If you were able to add that cabling to each vehicle towing, that would be most ideal. For that I recommend the Quick Connect Wiring # BDW20026. Your solar will supplement the power needed for your accessories and if you use deep cycle batteries you should have multiple days of use without a need to charge especially if you have sunny days. You will want to ensure you plan for the amp hour range of your batteries for the accessories you will be running.
