Recommended 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter for 2018 Ram 3500

Question:

Not recommended for Ram 2013 to present? The following note is on the product page: Note: This adapter is not recommended for use with Reese Elite Series gooseneck trailer hitches. It is also not recommended for use with factory-installed towing prep packages from Ford 2011 to present or Ram 2013 to present.

The reason the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter # CAB-C5G is not recommended for use with factory-installed gooseneck prep packages on Fords from 2011-present and Ram from 2013-present is because they use a gooseneck ball that has a plastic handle on top (see photo) that folds into the hitch ball and the Convert-A-Ball # CAB-C5G has a nut on the inside that will damage the gooseneck ball.

For that reason, if you wanted to use the Convert-A-Ball on your 2018 Ram 3500 you will need to switch to a different gooseneck ball, the Curt Ball and Safety Chain Loops Kit for Ram Underbed Gooseneck Hitch # C60618. This gooseneck ball has the same type of handle on top but it is metal so there won't be an issue with potential damage. I have added a link to a video review of this kit for you to check out.

Otherwise, if you want to keep your current gooseneck ball, you would need a different adapter, the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter # AM3100 which will work so long as your measurement from the bottom of the king-pin plate to top of the hitch ball when your truck and trailer are level is between 11-3/4" to 14-3/4".

The Ranch Hitch bolts over your king pin and comes with installation hardware, though it is recommended you use the Slide Hammer for Ranch Hitch 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter # AM3103 to make the install easier. I have added a photo a customer sent in using this adapter as well as a link to a video review of this adapter for you to check out as well.

I have a 2020 GMC diesel that came with the Curt ball removable kit. Will that work for the convert a ball 5th wheel to goose neck connection? It was a factory install from GMC. It’s for a 38ft 5th wheel!

Yes, as long as your existing Curt hitch ball doesn't feature that plastic handle (if so just replace it with the Curt # C60618 mentioned above), the Convert-A-Ball # CAB-C5G will work well to hook up your 5th wheel to your 2020 Sierra.
