Recommendation for Converting Air Brake Trailer to Electric Brake Trailer

Question:

Have a 2002 chevy 3500 and a trailer with two 20k axles. The trailer is airbrake. I was wondering if I can add a airbrake system too the 3500 or convert the airbrakes to electric brakes on the trailer.

For your trailer, you will need to replace your axle and brakes to give you a system compatible with your 2002 Chevy 3500. We don't have any way to convert your vehicle to air brakes, but you can convert your trailer to electric brakes by replacing the axles, hubs, and brake assemblies.

My recommendation is the Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - E-Z Lube - 8 on 6-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 95" - 7,000 lbs # 8327834-EB which will have 80 inch on center spring seats. This comes with the electric brake assemblies and hubs.

If you don't want to worry about suspension, you can instead use the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System - Spindle w/ Brake Flange - Regular Tires - 7K # TASR7KS01 which has the integrated suspension. Then you will need brake assemblies # 23-106 and # 23-105 along with hub # 42866UC3-EZ. Then you will use # 10-1-1 wire sold by the foot and the 7-Way Molded Trailer Plug with Junction Box # HS381-9000 along with # 44-5310A for the wiring.

I've attached an article to assist with the trailer wiring for this conversion.
