When towing a fifth-wheel trailer behind a truck with a 5 foot 6 inch box, a Sidewinder replacement pin box will be required.

The Sidewinder pin box will move the pivot point for the trailer back 22 inches, providing clearance, in most cases, for making sharp turns with the fifth-wheel trailer attached to the truck. On some trucks with a bed less than 6 feet long, trailers that are very wide, like 102 inches, cannot be towed even with a Sidewinder, so measuring closely ahead of time is required. We have an informational article that explains how a Sidewinder works and how to select the correct Sidewinder for your fifth-wheel trailer. There is also a formula that you can use to be sure that a Sidewinder will work with your truck and the trailer you select.

I produced a short video that shows how moving the pivot point back with a Sidewinder provides extra clearance.

When using a sidewinder you will want to select a stationary fifth-wheel hitch and installation kit for your specific tow vehicle. Our year-make-model fit guide, see link, will help you select the correct a hitch and install kit for your truck. Fifth-wheel hitches with slider units will not provide enough clearance, for maneuvering in tight situations with truck beds less than 6 feet long.

If you would like to send me the year-make-model of your truck, the model number of the pin box on your fifth-wheel trailer and the overall width of the front of your trailer, I would be glad to help select the items needed for your towing setup.

For your 2016 Ram I highly recommend the Reese 5th Wheel Hitch # RP30047 along with the Custom Base Rail Kit # RP50142-58. From there it's just a matter of picking out the right Sidewinder replacement based on the existing pin box model on your trailer. If you can give me this information I can make a specific recommendation.
