Will Yakima BackSwing Hitch Extender Work with Surf Rod or Cooler
Question:
Would this swing away work for a surf rod / cooler rear mount basket ? Xterra rear hatch door will not clear rear rod holders on Basket .. ..weight and hitch size all good , saw it was good with cargo carriers just asking - or would you be able to point me toward a more task specific item you carry ?? many thanks

The Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender # Y02483 referenced in your question is designed to work with most hitch-mounted accessories. There are a couple of things to keep in mind when determining if this will work well with your surf rod/cooler.
First you will just want to make sure that your carrier is directly compatible with 2 inch receivers and that the combined weight of both the carrier and its contents will not exceed the BackSwing's 250 pound capacity.
Another important factor to note is that using this accessory will reduce your trailer hitch's tongue weight capacity by 50 percent. For example if the hitch on your Xterra has a tongue weight limit of 350 pounds, this will be reduced to 175 pounds when using the BackSwing. Since you are always limited by a setup's weakest component, you will need to adhere to the reduced capacity on your trailer hitch if it is lower than the 250 pound capacity on the BackSwing.
As long as the weight of your surf rod/cooler when loaded doesn't exceed these ratings, this unit will work great and allow you to have complete access to the rear cargo area on your Xterra. I have attached a short video demonstration that you can also check out.
