How to Limit the Movement of a Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Carrying a Generator and Gas Cans
Question:
How much rocking side to side would you expect with a 70 pound generator and 2 small gas cans? 2 gallon or so each.

That all depends on if you have a 1-1/4 inch hitch or 2 inch hitch since Curt cargo carrier # C18145 fits both. There would be more play in a 2 inch hitch just because that is the nature of the 1-1/4 to 2 inch adapters like the one included with the carrier.
I would not expect any more movement than normal which is to say that at either the far right or far left sides of the carrier you may see a total of 1 inch of travel. It sounds like a lot but it really isn't. The slight amount of play at the receiver is amplified at the ends of the carrier due to the distance they are from the center of the receiver.
You can limit the movement some by using an anti-rattle device in conjunction with the threaded hitch bolt included with the carrier. The thread bolt helps with side to side movement so you would need something for the up and down movement. For a 1-1/4 inch hitch the Quiet Hitch # RM-061-125 is a great option. The model for 2 inch hitches is # RM-061. I have linked some videos on these for you.
