Can Trailer Brakes Rated for 2K be Used on an Axle Rated for 2.2K

Question:

Hi I have a 2016 T@G tear that comes with a 2,200# dexter torsions axle with EZ lube. I did pull the idler off and checked the the bearings are L44649 for both the inner and outer. It does not come with brakes and I want to add them. I only seem to find K23-103-104-00 model that is rated for 2.2k# for the electric brakes. I cannot find any hub and drum with that rating. I want to see if I can use your in house brand which is rated for 2k# AKEBRK-2 with hub and drum AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K instead of the Dexter to save some money. I also have 15 inch wheels. Would the 200# be a major issue in safety? I dont ever plan on loading it even close to 2k#. Please let me know I would love to get this ordered and installed ASAP. Thanks!

You can most certainly use the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-2 with your 2,200 lb axle. Even if you are at the 2,200 lb weight capacity of your axle you will be just fine. You will also need to swap out your idler hubs for hub and drum assemblies. If you have an EZ Lube spindle use part # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K but if you would like the standard grease cap use part # AKHD-545-2-2K instead.

Some other things you will need are a brake mounting flange, wiring, a breakaway kit, and a brake controller. For a mounting flange you can use part # 4-35 while you can use 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 and a junction box part # HS381-9000 for your wiring. One of the most popular breakaway kits that we have is the Hopkins Engager # 20099 which I highly recommend checking out.

Out of all of our brake controllers I recommend going with the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that will apply the brakes on your trailer at the same time and with the same intensity as the brakes in your vehicle. The best feature about this brake controller is the LCD screen that makes operation and diagnosing any problems much easier than an older controller that only uses codes.

I have also linked a helpful article to this page on electric brakes for you to check out. If your tow vehicle isn't already setup for towing just let me know what you need and I can make additional recommendations as well.
