Circuit Breaker Rating for +12V Auxiliary Power Circuit on 7-Way Wiring

Question:

Hello, Im installing a hitch with a 4 pole wiring harness, and will be converting to a 4 pole/7 pole dual output harness and hooking up a Curt Venture brake controller. I have the Curt brake controller wiring kit with a 30amp breaker and all the necessary wiring. I just purchased a separate 30amp breaker for the 7 pole adapter. Is 30amp enough? Im seeing install instructions now that call for a 40amp breaker. I just want to make sure Im safe before hooking up to the battery.

Expert Reply:

In a 7-way wiring set-up the +12V auxiliary power circuit that is present to power a jack or top off the charge on a trailer battery is usually protected with a 40-amp breaker. The 30-amp breaker is appropriate for the brake controller. The 40-amp breaker # 9510 has an auto-reset feature that will re-connect the circuit once any overload condition has been removed. The copper-color post connects to the battery.
