Are Thule Fork-Mount Bike Racks Okay to Use With Carbon Forks?

Question:

I am considering a fork mount bike rack for my car and have recently noticed that Thule does not recommend these anymore for my carbon forks. What has changed with their technology? I have used fork mount carriers for over a decade with carbon and never had a problem.

Expert Reply:

Due to the fact that carbon fiber bikes have a more sensitive frame, Thule does recommend using the Thule UpRide # TH599000.

Bike rack technology has not changed to make the racks less compatible, but carbon fiber bikes have become increasingly popular and manufacturers are adjusting their recommendations based on that. Carbon fiber frames are strong but are prone to cracking if not properly handled which makes a wheel-mounted carrier like the UpRide # TH599000 such an attractive choice for the owners of carbon frame bikes.
