Troubleshooting Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack
Question:
I am trying to install my electric jack. I just cannot get it to work. When looking at the QandA ask the expert it suggests checking the ground and to apply the 12v power directly to the motor. The problem is that it does not explain how you can actually perform either of these 2 steps. Is it possible to obtain a detailed step by step explanation for these 2 tests?

The Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000 has a ground connection to the trailer frame through the mounting flange. The ground connection needs to be solid, so often a star washer is used to ensure a connection or the bottom of the flange and top of coupler are sanded to bare metal on metal for a clean ground connection.
Since you are unsure if your jack works, I recommend putting a wire directly from your battery's negative terminal to the mounting base. Then I recommend connecting the positive terminal to the positive wire. If the jack does not work, then I recommend removing the outer housing and connecting that positive wire directly to the motor where the factory installed wire connects. This will let you know if the wire coming from the motor or the switch is the problem and needs to be replaced or if the motor itself is the problem.
