Recommended Supplementary Transmission Cooler for 2004 Dodge Dakota

I’m having issues with my transmission getting hot while towing. I just recently changed the fluid to see if that would help. I’m wondering if I need to upgrade my transmission cooler. Any info is appreciated.

Transmission fluid temperature can rise quickly when towing, especially in warmer weather and when towing on uphill grades which naturally mean slower speeds and reduced air flow to your Dakota's cooling system. Supplementary coolers are a wise addition to a towing vehicle, and so too is keeping your transmission fluid fresh as you have done.
Standard passive coolers like Derale # D13503 (along with hose fitting kit # D13030) can install in front of your AC condenser to give you more heat-radiating surface so long as you are at speed.
But if you want to gain the most cooling potential for your 3.7L you can install a fan-powered remote cooler like the Derale Atomic-Cool # D13950. A remote-mount fan cooler gives you more choice in where to install it since it does not rely on passive air flow to work. It will cool your transmission as needed all the time without regard to your driving speed. If you often tow up into the hills this is a superb enhancement to your truck. You will again need the hose fitting kit # D13030.
