Weight Distribution System for Car Hauler Trailer with 6000-lb Gross Weight

Question:

I have a 2014 F150 and will be hauling a 18 foot flatbed car hauler trailer with a combined weight of about 6,000 lbs. Using the formula for tongue weight being between 10 and 15 of total trailer weight, that would put me in the 600 lb to 900 lb tongue weight category. Would the Reese Strait Line RP66084 be a good choice of weight distributing hitch for this application? Any help would be apppreciated. Thanks

A loaded car hauler trailer with a GVWR of 6000-lbs will indeed have a tongue weight (TW) in the 600- to 900-lb range you mentioned. But the thing with car hauler trailers in particular is that depending on the specific loaded vehicle and exactly where it is positioned on the trailer deck you can find a fair bit of variation in the TW.

If you will always transport the same vehicle then this is not such a big deal; in this case you would end up with the vehicle loaded in pretty much the same position and have a fairly consistent TW from trip to trip. But I do recommend measuring your loaded trailer TW using scale # e99044. This will be really helpful in finding the correct vehicle position on the trailer to ensure your TW is indeed in the ideal 12- to 14-percent range.

The ideal situation is to have your actual loaded TW fall right in the middle of the system's operating range. The excellent Reese Strait-Line # RP66084 works over the TW range of 600- 1200-lbs, making it a perfect choice for a loaded trailer TW of 900-lbs or thereabouts.
