Can Different Tires be Used So That the Trailer has a Higher Speed Rating

Question:

Hi, Im buying a trailer that is rated for 45 mph but I need it to go 65-70 mph as most of my 1 hour trip will be highway. The trailer is rated for over 1000 lbs but I will not get near that weight. Do I just need to replace tires and rims with higher speed rated tires? Thanks!

Typically the speed rating of a trailer is determined by the tires, yes. I haven't heard of an actual trailer being rated for a certain speed, so it would make sense that if you changed out your tires for some that have a higher speed rating then you could travel faster.

If you can confirm you current trailer tire size and what bolt pattern you have on your wheel then I can make a recommendation for you. For example, the Taskmaster # TA26RR is a 5.30-12 size tire that comes on a 12" silver mod wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. It has a load range of C (1,050 lbs at 80 psi) and a speed rating of M which is 81 mph.

I have linked a few helpful tire articles for you to reference for the bolt pattern and more information.
