Recommended Economical Kayak Carrier for 2008 Toyota Highlander with Factory Roof Rack
Question:
Am probably going to buy a kayak soon. 12foot long, 34inch wide, 80lbs. I have a 2008 Toyota Highlander with the standard roof rack. I dont want to spend a ton of money but dont want to be stupid and ruin the kayak OR ruin the Highlander. What would be a safe, reliable, economical carrier for me???

Since you're only carrying one kayak and it's 12 feet long I recommend a J-style carrier.
I recommend the Rhino-Rack carrier, part # S512, because it has a maximum capacity of 99 pounds and is reasonably priced. It's also a folding carrier so it can stored on the roof without having to worry about clearance like with a fixed rack.
If you want to go up in price a little bit the next option to look at is the Yakima JayLow, part # Y04073. It's still a folding carrier that can handle up to an 80 pound kayak but it also adds the ability to carry a second kayak if you ever need to. Although you need a second set of tie-down straps, part # Y04031. You can also add locks to the JayLow using part # Y07202.
