Converting Hydraulic Surge Brakes to Electric Trailer Brakes on Boat Trailer

Question:

I would like to convert my single servo galvanized brakes to electric on my boat. I figure I will need new drums with the machined surface for the brake magnet. Can I use my backing plates, or do I need new ones? Can I use my existing shoes or is there an electric kit?

If you want to convert from hydraulic to electric brakes, you will need to replace the entire brake assembly including the backing plate. The assemblies will come with the shoes, magnets, and backing plate.

Then you will need brake wiring # 10-1-1 to run up to a 7-way. The easy connection is to use a molded cord like # 277-000143 and some heat shrink connectors like # DW05745-10. I recommend disconnecting your wiring prior to launching or loading your boat at the ramp. Water and electricity don't work well together, so simply disconnecting before submerging and waiting a few seconds after loading will help the system to work fine on your boat trailer.

You will not need to replace your hub/drums for proper function with a brake magnet.

If you have 10 inch brake assemblies then you will want # AKEBRK-35-SA as a replacement and if your have 12 inch brake assemblies you will want # AKEBRK-7-SA.

You will also need a brake controller for your vehicle, and if you don't already have one, I recommend the Prodigy P3 # 90195 which is a customer favorite due to the LCD screen and preset options. It makes understanding the diagnostics easy. If you let me know your vehicle year/make/model, I can help with the connection and wiring you need.
