What is the Extra Wire for on the 2011 Toyota Tundra Brake Controller Wiring Harness

Question:

my 2011 tundra harness has 5 wires and the 90160 has 4. I think the extra wire is the headlamp switch wire to the trail lamps, where does it go?

You are correct, if your 2011 Toyota Tundra is equipped with the factory towing package the fifth wire would be an illumination circuit tied into the tail light switch on your vehicle. This circuit is not used for any brake controller that we carry at this time.

To wire the PRIMUS IQ Electronic Brake Controller, item # TK90160 on your Tundra you can use the brake controller wiring adapter for Toyota , item # 3040-P. The black connector will plug into the brake controller and the white connector will plug into the brake controller port under your dash where the OEM harness is currently attached. You can just remove the OEM harness to avoid any splicing.

If your Tundra does not have the factory towing package the white wire from the Primus will be grounded, the black wire will need to be connected to the vehicle positive battery post, via a 30 amp circuit breaker, item # PK54530, the red wire connects to the cold side of the brake pedal switch that goes hot only when the brake pedal is pressed, and the blue wire is routed to the trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle.

I have provided some links to wiring that you may need and instructions for installation of a brake controller on a vehicle without a factory tow package. I also linked a video of a brake controller installation on a 2010 Toyota Tundra with factory tow package.
