Should Black Wire from Brake Controller Have Constant Power
Question:
Is the black wire for the brake controller a key on 12V or constant 12V?

Expert Reply:
The black wire from a trailer brake controller will either be routed directly to the positive post on your vehicle's battery if hardwiring the controller, or to the 12V power pin of a factory brake controller port if your vehicle is equipped with one. Either way, the black wire will be connected to a constant power source, which is hot whether or not the vehicle is on.
With this in mind, you do not need to worry about the vehicle battery draining from this draw, as the LED from a brake controller requires such little power that it would take an extremely long time for a controller to drain a battery. Most brake controllers also go into a sleep mode after a certain period of time.
