Parts Needed to Add Electric Drum Brakes to a Trailer

Question:

I recently purchased a AKEBRK-35-SA kit? Im installing this on a trailer that has never had trailer brakes. Do I need anything in addition to this kit for the installation?

The first thing you need to do is check the trailer axle to see if it has brake mounting flanges. It will look like the square part welded onto # TRU74FR. If the trailer does not have those they will need to be added by a professional with experience in welding on brake flanges because it is a precision job. For a 3,500 pound axle you would use # 4-35 sold in quantities of 1. You would need 2 per axle.

You will also need to have hub and drum assemblies. For this I would need to know the inner and outer bearing numbers stamped into the sides of the bearings on your hubs now (unless they are 10 inch hub and drum assemblies).

Must 3,500 pound axles use inner bearing L68149 and outer bearing L44649 such as hub and drum # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K but it is always a good idea to check.

In addition to the parts above you will also need wiring for the brake magnets. The easiest way to do this is to add a 7-Way trailer connector to the trailer such as # 50-67-103.

The tow vehicle will also need a 7-Way connector and a brake controller. If your 2001 Chevy Silverado does not already have a 7-Way you can add one using # PK11898 if the factory harness located above the spare tire has blunt cut wires. If your truck has a round plug with a cap instead of a bundle of wires above the spare tire, use part # 30955 instead of the PK11898. I have linked a help article that will help.

For a brake controller I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. The help article mentioned above will also help with the brake controller installation.

And I have linked our help article on the parts needed to add electric drum brakes to a trailer.
