Selecting a Weight Distribution Hitch for a 2017 Toyota Tacoma and 4,300 lb Trailer
Question:
I have a 2017 Toyota Tacoma dbl cab, long bed with the tow package. The towing capacity on the Tacoma is 6400lbs. I am buying a 2018 NASH 17K with a dry hitch weight of 480lbs and a gross dry weight of 4320lbs. Can you suggest a good hitch set up? I am looking for weight distribution as well as sway control/prevention. Thank you for your help!

In order to choose the best weight distribution system for your 2017 Toyota Tacoma, you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your Tacoma. The tongue weight is typically between 10% and 15% of your trailer's GVWR but you'll want to verify it by using a scale such as the etrailer # e99044 or by using one of the methods outlined in the help article on determining tongue weight I've linked for you.
From there, simply add on the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your vehicle and you'll have your TTW. The ideal system would be one in which your TTW would fall somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity.
As an example, based on the numbers you gave your TTW may fall in the 600 lb range. For that a great weight distribution system would be the Reese Strait-Line Weight # RP66083, which is for TTW between 400 lbs and 800 lbs. It features a cam system which will prevent sway instead of just managing it and allows you to back up with the system on. This weight distribution system will only require a hitch ball, either # A-90 for a 2" ball or # 19286 for a 2-5/16" ball.
I've added links to video reviews of this system for you, as well as a link to our page with each of our weight distribution systems for you to take a look at.
