Recommendations for Larger Tires on Jayco Pop-Up Camper

Question:

I have a Jayco pop up that currently has 20.5x8-10 LRC tires with 4 on 4 wheels. I would like to go with a 13 inch radial because they wont run as hot and overheat and wheel with the highest load range possible, I think the problem is the pressure rating on the wheel itself, what can you recommend? I have a minimum of 2 inches between my current tires and my wheel wells with the possibility of modifications to accept a larger tire, would like at least load range D. Thanks

One of the most important things to do with trailer tires is to make sure that you are running the maximum psi that is listed on the tire. This will allow that tire to handle the maximum load capacity that it is rated for.

The overall diameter on your 20.5 x 8 -10 tires is 20-1/2 inches and if it is a load range C tire, the load capacity would be 1,100 lbs at 50 psi.

The smallest 13 inch trailer tire size is 175/80-13 and it has an overall diameter of 24.1. That will be a difference of 3-1/2 inches taller. If you were to use this size I would recommend the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C, part # AM3S120. This tire will have a maximum load of 1,360 lbs at 50 psi. I would not have a load range D tire in this size mounted on a wheel.

I would recommend looking at the Kenda ST145R12 Radial Trailer Tire with Aluminum Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range D, part # AM31208. This tire will have an overall diameter of 21.3 inches and will keep you within the 2 inch height difference from your 10 inch tire size. It is a load range D tire with a maximum load of 1,220 lbs at 65 psi.

I am including links to FAQ pages on trailer tire information.
