Recommended Trailer Hitch and Ball Mount for 2004 Dodge Durango

Question:

Hi, I am looking to buy a high and ball attachment for my 2004 Doge Durango SLT 4WD 4.7 gas engine. I will need to pull a 24-26 ft camper of around 7000 lbs. Thank You.

Starting with the trailer hitch (if you do not already have one), I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 75292. This Class III hitch is confirmed to fit your 2004 Dodge Durango and will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation. This will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and the hitch features a 6,000 pound towing capacity and 600 pound tongue weight capacity. When used with a weight distribution system, the towing capacity increases to 9,000 pounds with a 900 pound tongue weight limit. I recommend taking a look at your copy of the vehicle owner's manual to verify its capacity, as it can vary depending on what model Durango you have. You will need to follow whichever capacity is lower, the vehicle's or the hitch.

I have attached the written installation instructions that you can take a look at.

For a ball mount and hitch ball, I recommend taking a look at the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2 Inch Hitches # 989900. This kit includes two different 2 inch ball mounts, each featuring a different rise and drop measurement (one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop). Both a 2 inch and 1-7/8 inch hitch ball are also included. With the 2 inch hitch ball, the ball mount has a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds.

When choosing a ball mount, it is important to pick out one that will give you the necessary rise or drop to tow your trailer level. I have attached a great article that explains how to determine this, along with a link that will take you to our available ball mount selection if the above mentioned kit does not include a sufficient rise or drop for your application.

Finally, if your Durango does not have the factory tow package and you do not yet have a trailer wiring connector installed, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118390. This custom-fit harness will install by connecting directly to the built-in ports located behind the driver and passenger side tail lights. This will give you a 4-Way connector at the rear of the vehicle to connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights.

I have included an installation video on your vehicle that you can use for reference.

If your trailer is equipped with brakes, you will also need the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7, along with a brake controller like the excellent Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This wiring kit includes everything needed to install a fully functional 7-Way from the above 4-Way, along with the wiring needed to install the brake controller.

I have attached a couple articles and videos to assist with installation if needed.
