If you look on page 275 of your owner's manual it gives a list of trailer towing weights based upon the Class of the hitch that is installed on your 2004 Dodge Ram 1500.

Class I - 2,000 lbs
Class II - 3,500 lbs
Class III - 5,000 lbs
Class IV - 12,000 lbs

It then specifies that the Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) cannot be exceeded. You will be able to find this rating on your vehicle on the inside of the driver side door frame. This is the total permissible weight of your vehicle and trailer when weighed in combination. You will want to add together the curb weight of your truck (weight when no people or cargo is present), the weight of any passengers and cargo in your Ram 1500, as well as the loaded weight of your trailer to ensure that you do not exceed this rating.

If you need help putting it all together just let me know and I can assist you further.
