Question:

Hello, I am interested in purchasing this engine block heater for my Canyon and was wanting to know if you provided instructions on how to install this thing on my specific vehicle? I was hoping to do it myself.

For your 2016 GMC Canyon, the correct engine block heater will depend on which size engine you have. If you have the 2.5L I4 engine then you will want to use part # KH11484 but if you have the 3.6L V6 engine then you will want to use part # KH11811. If you are unsure of which engine you have there is an information sticker under the hood which will tell you which engine you have.

Both of the above engine block heaters come with a set of installation instructions. The instructions are generic and not specific to your application. However, the most common problem when installing an engine block heater is finding the proper location in which the plug/cartridge will need to be installed.

If you have the 2.5L I4 engine then the engine block heater will replace one of your frost plugs located on the drivers side of the engine, closest to the firewall. You can see this position labeled as "LR" in the attached photo (Figure 1). The easiest way to install this plug is through the drivers side wheel well with the vehicle jacked up. You will need to remove the wheel well liner in order to access this frost plug hole.

If you have the 3.6L V6 engine then the block heater simply plugs into an existing hole in the engine block and will not require you to remove any frost plugs. The correct position for this heater is on the passenger's side of the engine block closest to the firewall labeled as "RR" in the attached photo (Figure 2).

You will want to use part # KH28405 to cover the plug on the power cord while not in use to protect from corrosion.
