Recommendation to Convert Surge Brakes to Electric Brakes

Question:

I want to replace the surge brakes on four hubs wheel hubs welded to the frame of my trailer. What is the best way of doing this? And what measurements do I need to take to order parts? Replace surge brakes w/electric

It is unclear to me what is welded to your trailer frame, but I'm assuming it is the surge brake coupler, which you can leave as is when converting to electric brakes. The small amount of movement won't effect the coupler's ability to work and you can always drill through the coupler and install a bolt to immobilize the actuator. You can replace the coupler if you desire by cutting or grinding the welded locations and installing a weld on or bolt on coupler in its place.

For your brake assemblies, you will need to simply measure your hubs to determine if they are 10 inch or 12 inch. If they are 12 inch, I recommend the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 12" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 5.2K to 7K # AKEBRK-7-SA and if they are 10 inch I recommend # AKEBRK-35-SA. You can use the same hub/drum assemblies already on your trailer.

To wire them, I recommend # 10-2-1 along with the 7-Way Molded Trailer Plug with Junction Box # HS381-9000. You can use # 44-5310A for the connections to the junction box and # DW05745-5 for the brake assemblies.

For a brake controller to use with this trailer, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195.
