How Installed SMI Air Force One Receives Power While 2016 GMC Canyon Being Towed

Question:

I watched your video on the installation of the Air Force One on a 2016 Chevy Colorado which should be similar to the GMC Canyon. The question I have is that the manufacturer recommends disconnecting the negative on the battery while being towed so would that disconnect the Air Force One power as well? Or how does it work. Thanks for any information you have.

The power and functionality requirements of the Air Force One System, Item # SM99243, are taken care of when it is directly attached to the vehicle battery during installation. Everything will still function even if the negative cable is off of the battery because only the positive terminal and a ground location are needed

The Air Force One works by engaging the brakes for a towed vehicle when it receives air from the coach air connection. It diverts a matching amount of air through a hose to the actuating cylinder mounted in the towed vehicle so that it applies proportionate braking pressure for your towed vehicle.

Does this cause the toad vehicle battery to discharge? Is a charging line from the RV required?

This will depend a bit on your specific vehicle - can you tell me what model vehicle you plan on towing?

@ChrisR 2020 Chevy Colorado Z71 4WD behind a diesel pusher with air brakes, using the Air Force One supplemental braking system.

@KeithM Thanks! For this setup on your Colorado a charge line kit isn't required to maintain the battery's charge during travel.
