Power Draw From Prodigy P3 Brake Controller 90195 When Not in Use

Question:

I ordered the 90195 Tekonsha Prodigy P3 and will be using the 3045-P Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter to connect it to my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Should I disconnect the Tekonsha P3 brake controller from the wiring adapter when Im not towing a trailer? I plan to be towing our trailer every month or so however, there may be a few months during the winter when we wont be towing. Does the Tekonsha P3 turn off when its not connected to a trailer? Or is it expected that people disconnect the Tekonsha P3 when they are not towing a trailer? Thanks!

You made a great choice of trailer brake controller with the Prodigy P3 # 90195 since this unit is considered among the very best and most user-friendly proportional controllers available. It offers a mix of features that is hard to beat and its reliability is well-documented.

In your 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee you will use the quick-connect wiring adapter # TK93VR to install the Prodigy on a Jeep vehicle that has the factory-installed 7-way trailer connector. I linked a video showing these two items installed in a 2014 model year GC.

Trailer brake controllers do not have on/off power switches. The lack of such a switch is simply a safety feature that prevents accidentally hitching and towing a trailer without trailer brake power. That could lead to bad things and in the rush to get to or to leave a favorite campground or other nice destination one might forget to turn it back on.

For this reason trailer brake controllers will 'go to sleep' after a period of being motionless. Their actual power draw when not connected to a trailer's brake circuit will be so very low that it is not even a concern. It would take many months of continuous power draw on a vehicle that is not driven to deplete the battery. You need not worry about this at all.
