Question:

I'm really looking for an inexpensive trailer brake controller as it will only get used once. What would you recommend

For your 1998 Ford F-150 Extended Cab with factory 4-way flat, you need the Tekonsha Ford Replacement OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness, 7-Way # 118242. This will give you the two additional relays needed as well as the wiring harness.

Then you will need a brake controller. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 as well as the wiring adapter # 3035-P. This will give you an easy to use proportional brake controller with easy to use presets as well as a nice LCD screen for diagnostics. The custom wiring connector is easy to install with the factory plug located beneath the dash, near the center console.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Does that harness come with a bracket to bolt to bumper?

The # 118242 harness does not come with the bracket for mounting. I recommend the mounting bracket # PK12711U for your connector. You may also be interested in the no drill bracket # C57202 if you want to connect it to your trailer hitch cross tube versus drilling into your bumper.

For a brake controller that will work for your one time use, I recommend either the Tekonsha Voyager # 39510 for a proportional controller (more natural for those that don't use controllers often) or the time delayed Tekonsha PowerTrac # 39523. The proportional controller will apply your trailer brakes at the same time and with the same pressure as you hit your brake pedal. The time delayed controller will apply the brakes at the determined preset pressure at the determined time delay you set it.
