Kuat Sherpa 2.0 and Saris Freedom SuperClamp Comparison for Use with Two Vehicles
Question:
Im looking for a bike rack for my mountain bike and road bikes. I have a 2008 passat wagin with a curt 1 1/4 hitch snd a 2003 excursion with its factory 2 inch. Ive been looking at the kuat sherpa 2 and the saris freedom superclamp 2 ex. Part numbers sh12g and sa4025f. Id prefer that the hitch can be easily installed and removed frombtge vehicle multiple times since both vehicles have other duties for their respective hitches. Is there any other hitch mkiunbt racks i should consider? I want no frame contact and the tilting option bot of these offer.

Both the Saris Freedom SuperClamp EX 2 Bike Rack # SA4025F and the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 2-Bike Rack # SH12G referenced in your question are excellent, top-of-the line bike racks. As you mentioned, both racks will secure the bikes by their wheels only and also feature a convenient tilting feature to allow for easy rear cargo access on the vehicle.
When looking at these two models, I recommend going with the Saris Freedom SuperClamp EX 2 Bike Rack # SA4025F. The first reason for this is that this particular rack is actually compatible with both 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch trailer hitch receivers. This will let you switch between your two vehicles, which differ in their receiver sizes, without issue. The Kuat Sherpa 2.0 is only compatible with 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch receivers.
A couple of additional features that set the Saris Freedom apart is its capacity and what is included with the carrier. The Freedom is capable of holding 2 bikes of up to 60 pounds each, while the Kuat Sherpa has a maximum capacity of 40 pounds per bike. The Saris Freedom also includes both an integrated cable lock to lock the bikes into place as well as a hitch lock to secure the carrier itself to the vehicle. The Kuat Sherpa includes only the bike lock and a hitch lock would need to be purchased separately to add further peace of mind.
With all of this in mind, the Saris Freedom Bike Rack will definitely be your best option. Also note that this is an extremely light rack, especially for a platform style, at just 35 pounds. This, along with its convenient front mounted push lever, will allow a single person to install, remove, tilt and fold up the rack with ease
I have attached a short video demonstration on this bike rack so you can get a closer look at all of its individual features.
