Troubleshooting a Bouncing Boat Trailer, Possible Causes and Solutions  

Question:

I have a 17ft boat and the trailer came with the boat, both were purchased new and it always had a trailer hop problem when you travel about 65-70 mph. last year i had the tires balanced but it didnt help the problem at all. It always hops on the right side??? Any input would be get for when it hops the wheel comes off the ground 6-8 inches!! Thank You

It sounds like a problem with tongue weight. In this case, the tongue weight may be too high meaning too much weight is forward of the trailer axle, pushing down on the hitch, or too low. If at all possible, try moving some weight further back or forward. If you have a large motor on the back, it could be making the tongue weight too low, while gear at the front or items mounted to the trailer tongue area can make it too high.

Also, most trailer tires are rated for a maximum speed of 65 miles per hour. I would check the speed rating on the tire, if available. If not, I recommend not exceeding 65 mph. Make sure your tires have ST in front of the size (Special Trailer). Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum rated psi as indicated on the tire side wall.

I have also heard from other boat owners with the same problem that if you tie a strap from the bow to the winch stand or trailer frame that this also helps.
