Recommended 4-Way Connection Between Towed Vehicle and Motorhome

Question:

Which plug is better for towing a car with a motorhome, four flat or four round? Can you tell me any advantages or disadvantages between the two. Why do most motorhomes use four round instead of four flat? Thanks.

The only real advantage of the 4 round over the 4 flat trailer connector is the clean look of the connection point and the protection from elements when not in use. For instance the Pollak Heavy-Duty, 4-Pole, Round Pin Socket, Concealed Terminals - Chrome - Vehicle End # PK11410 has a clean finished look on the front of a towed vehicle and will protect the connection from dirt and debris with the spring loaded cover.

Many people like the connection between the motorhome using a harness like the Hopkins Nite-Glow Tow Bar Extension Cord w/ Socket - Coiled - 7-Way RV to 4-Way Round - 8' Long # HM47044 or the Hopkins Nite-Glow Tow Bar Extension Cord w/ Sockets - Coiled - 4-Way Round - 8' Long # HM47046. For a 4-way round to 4 way flat connection, you will need the Custer Trailer Connector Adapter - 4-Way Round to 4-Way Flat # ADP001.

4 way flat connectors can use the Mounting Bracket 4-Pole Flat # 18144 and dust cover # C58200 which will give a connection that can be used with the Hopkins Endurance, Flex-Coil Trailer Connector Adapter - 7-Way to 5-Way or 4-Way Flat with Nite-Glow # HM47075 or the Hopkins Endurance Easy-Pull 4-Flat Extension w/ 2 Grip Rings - Vehicle and Trailer Ends - 48" # HM47114.

With any of these connections some dielectric grease like # 11755 is wise to keep moisture and debris out of your connections.
