Recommendations to Tow a Trailer and 2 Bikes with a 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon 2.5i Limited

Question:

Hi, I have a 2018 Subaru 2.5 Limited Outback. I am looking for a 2inch receiver hitch. I will be using it to tow an utility trailer with max 1500lbs and bike rack that can hold 2 bikes. Which hitch products would you recommend, including wiring. Would your 2017 outback videos still apply for the 2018 model? thanks

The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75673 is what I recommend for you to install on your 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon as it can easily tow a 1,500-lb trailer and hold 2 bikes. You will want to check your owner's manual though about the max Tongue Weight (TW) of your Outback Wagon. From what I found online it looks like it has a TW capacity of 200 lbs which, since a trailer's TW should be 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight, could be an issue if you are wanting to carry bikes as well.

For wiring I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118467 which will give you a 4-Way flat connector for the lights on your trailer. I have attached installation videos of both products on a 2017 Outback Wagon which will be similar to installing it on your 2018 version.

You will also need a Ball Mount and Hitch Ball like what is included with the Curt Class III Ball Mount with 2 inch Ball # C45036. This option gives you a 2 inch Drop with the shank - you will want to check out the attached helpful article about Ball Mounts to make sure that this setup is the correct solution for your setup. This option comes with a Hitch Pin and Clip, but I recommend going with a product like part # e98880, or part # 63232 to secure the accessory in your 2" trailer hitch receiver.

A great bike rack option for this setup is the Swagman Nomad # S36FR which can hold up to two 35-lb bikes. This bike rack doesn't come with lock for the bikes but you can use a Cable Lock #e98891 to do so. I have attached a review video for this rack that you can reference for additional information.
