Trunk Mounted Wheelchair Rack for a 2012 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

Question:

I need to find a way to carry my moms folding, non-electric wheelchair on the back of a 2012 Ford Mustang Convertible. It does not fit in the trunk. Will a trunk mount bike carrier work in this situation? The wheelchair weights about 40 pounds. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you

A manual chair like yours technically could fit onto a trunk bike rack like the Saris Guardian, part # SAR93FR, but I don't recommend that this is a direct solution. The wheel will hang slightly lower than it really should safely and potentially scrape on the ground and could damage the vehicle or the wheelchair itself.

I do however recommend adding a traditional cargo carrier to the vehicle. This will provide both a stable, safe location for the wheelchair as well as expandability for the future, and add cargo space that you may value for other applications such as vacation.

First, you'll need a hitch like the Draw-Tite Class I, part # 24863. This is a no-drill installation and I've included a video of it being installed on a 2011 Mustang GT Convertible so you can get familiar with the process.

Then, you'll add a cargo carrier. I recommend the Reese Cargo Carrier, part # 63155. The mesh floor gives you the support you need for the wheels and the raised sides will let you use tie downs like part # IMF12636 to secure the wheelchair.
