Recommended Brake Controller and 7-Way Wiring Upgrade on 2013 Ford F-150 XL

Question:

I had a four-plug flat I wanted to replace with a combo flat/round since my job requires me to pull both types. I bought a Hopkins combo and normally know what I am doing but the wires dont make sense. I only have a black, white, blue and purple. Im putting it on a 2013 F-150 XL.

For your adapter to a 7-way from a 4-way flat, you most likely have an adapter like the Adapter 4-Pole to 7-Pole and 4-Pole # 37185. With this adapter, you simply connect your 4-way using a little dielectric grease like # 11755, and then connect the remaining wires.

The wire colors and functions are as follows:
Black = 12V
White = Ground
Blue = Brake Controller output
Purple = Reverse lights

These connections can be hard wired using a little extra wire like # 12-1-1 sold by the foot, but for the 12V power and brakes, I recommend the # 10-2-1. Some models do have the brake (blue) and hot lead (orange or red) wire that will connect to blue and black respectively already run from under the hood to the end of the driver's side frame rail. However, these wires are hard to access and additional wire will still be needed as stated above. The benefit if these wires are present is that you can use the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ford F-150 # 22292 to install your brake controller.

Another option is to use kit # 5506 to install the brake controller if you don't have the wiring already run to your driver's side frame rail. This will allow you to hardwire these functions while avoiding the factory wiring.

In either case, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 for your brake controller. This will give you a proportional controller that will apply your trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity as you hit your brake pedal. This controller has an easy to understand LCD screen and easy preset options for your various trailers. It is a customer favorite. I've attached a video to assist.
