Can the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller be Installed on a 2017 Isuzu D-Max

Question:

Hello I have a Isuzu d-max 2017 model 4x4, I want to fit the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller, and tow a fifth wheel with tandem axles. I am not able to understand what all parts I require, I understand the tow vehicle connecting wires come with the controller. but how do I connect the fifth wheel electric brakes. What are the connecting wires that I require. I need the complete system to connect the controller to the tow vehicle and the connectors to connect the trailer.

The 2017 Isuzu D-Max cannot be fitted with a 5th wheel trailer hitch. This is the case for all mid-sized trucks with the exception of the 1997 to 2004 Dodge Dakota. You could pull a regular travel trailer just not a 5th wheel or gooseneck trailer.

To add a brake controller such as the P3 # 90195 to your D-Max you will need a 7-Way trailer connector and the brake controller itself. If the truck has a 7-Way trailer connector already then it is possible that the needed wires for a brake controller are already up under the dash near the steering column, and held together with a white tag that describes the wire functions. On the brake controller the white wire is ground, black is 12 volt power, blue is output to the trailer brakes, and red is input from the brake switch.

If the truck does not have a trailer connector then you would start by installing a 4-Way. Since the D-Max is not available in the US I cannot confirm that any of the custom fit wiring harnesses will work so it is best to use a universal 4-Way such as # 119250KIT.

With it installed you can then install # ETBC7 to add the 7-Way and it also comes with the wiring and accessories to hardwire in a brake controller. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation.

The trailer will also need to have a 7-Way trailer connector. If the trailer has electric brakes though it probably already has one.
