What to Consider When Converting Single Axle Trailer to Tandem Axle

Question:

I have a 1995 Trail-Rite single-axle 3700 GVWR trailer. I would like to convert to a tandem axle 5000 GVWR. I see many conversion kits but I am not sure which one to get. Any suggestions? Thanks!

You can convert a single axle trailer to a tandem axle but it's more extensive than just putting the extra axle on there. The current axle does need to be repositioned for proper tongue weight. You will also need to cut off the current hangers since the hanger spacing will not be the same. I've attached a chart that you can use to determine the axle placement.

You'll need to the axle's weight capacity and diameter as well as the length and type of springs. Then we can determine exactly which parts you'll need to complete the job.

You'll also need to replace the fenders with tandem axle fenders which we do not carry.

I've attached some links to our selection of parts that you'll need as well.
