Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2013 Audi Q7

Question:

since I asked the question, I noticed that I need a 5 flat connection for my trailer with brakes. I have no wiring or hitch now, so I am trying to figure if I should go with a 5 flat from the car, or the standard 7 round and connect to the 5 flat. Thoughts?

For your 2013 Audi Q7, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 75950 over the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 13220 because it requires a stability strap # 18050 for any non-trailer loads like bike racks and cargo carriers. The attached installation details do not state trimming is required for your model vehicle.

If you will be towing or using a lighted accessory, I recommend the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C59236. This will give you a 4-way trailer connection.

For a ball mount, I recommend the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 5" Drop, 5-1/2" Rise - 7.5K - Black # BWTS10038B. This ball mount will give you adjustability to tow many trailers level and gives you 2 integrated hitch balls; one 1-7/8 inches and one 2 inches in diameter. One of the really nice features of this hitch is a stowable option to give a clean look when not in use. It also protects your shins when loading and unloading cargo by getting it out of the way. I recommend securing your investment with a locking hitch like # BX8858.

For your 5-way for your trailer with brakes, I recommend starting with the 4-way I suggested # C59236 and then use the universal brake controller wiring kit # ETBC7 to give you the 7-way wiring that will allow you to use many other trailers as well as give you a standard wiring connection. Then for a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is my favorite because it gives you braking at your trailer that is at the same time and with the same amount of pressure as you hit the brake pedal in your Q7. It also has an easy to read and understand LCD screen that has easy presets to make towing easy for everyone from the expert to the novice. I've attached a video to assist. Then for your 5 way, I recommend the Tow Ready 4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter # 20036 which will use the 5 o'clock position on your 7 way for the brakes on that blue wire so you can just use a wiring spade connector like # DW01899-1 instead of splicing into your wires. If you have surge brakes on your trailer and just need the reverse lockout connection to your reverse light function, then you can use # 20036 without a brake controller or other wiring to convert your 4-way flat trailer connection to a 5-way.
