Parts Needed to Add Electric Drum Brakes to 2017 Load Rite 20280096VT Boat Trailer
Question:
Good afternoon: I purchased a 2017 Load Rite 20280096VT trailer that does not have brakes. The weight of the boat will be close to 2800 lbs and I want to add brakes to the trailer. My 2015 Jeep Cherokee has factory-installed wiring, a brake controller and a class III hitch. I am looking for a coupler-to-tail light brake kit. Can you recommend a model? Please let me know, thanks.

We can help you with the parts needed to add electric drum brakes to your 2017 Load Rite 20280096VT single-axle boat trailer. There is no all-inclusive kit made for your specific trailer but we can help with each of the components you'll need to make this trailer upgrade. Please have a look at the linked article that details this very process you're looking to undertake. Since you already have a trailer brake controller in your Cherokee we'll just need to concern ourselves with the trailer.
Starting at the trailer tongue, you will need a 7-way plug and wiring junction box such as # HS381-9000, which includes the required ring terminals. This will allow you to join the existing trailer wiring to the new 7-way. You will also need duplex wire # 10-2-1 to wire the brakes to the junction box. A wiring kit like # HM51020 will be helpful too.
Your spindles will need to have brake flanges to allow you to mount brakes rated for your axle capacity, which is likely to be 3500-lbs. For selecting hub/drums you will want to know your existing hubs' bearing set, inner and outer, since the new hub/drum must use the same bearings in order to fit your spindles. The hubs also need to match the wheels' bolt pattern.
For brakes for a 3500-lb axle I suggest kit # AKEBRK-35-SA which includes left and right brakes with a 4-bolt flange mounting pattern. These work with the 14-inch wheels on the trailer. All brakes for 3500-lb axles are linked for you. Either brake wire can be ground or hot.
For hubs you can use the linked hub/drum page that shows 5-on-4-1/2 hub/drums for 3500-lb axles. You can select other axle ratings or bolt patterns if needed.
For a trailer breakaway kit you can use # 50-85-313.
