Can You Back Up Trailer with Friction Sway Control Bars Installed
Question:
Reese 26660 Can you back up with this hooked up to the trailer and trailer?

Expert Reply:
Friction sway control bars like the Reese 26660 that you mentioned, which is no longer available by the manufacturer, or the similar Reese # 83660, do not allow you to back up your trailer while they are installed. If you were to back up while turning at all with one of these units installed, it will likely cause damage to the system because of the force that is applied to the bar while in reverse.
If you would like to install a system that will provide better sway control while also allowing you to back up the trailer, I recommend looking into a complete weight distribution system. To choose a properly rated system, you will want to determine your setup's total tongue weight. This will include both the loaded tongue weight of your trailer, along with any added weight coming from behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Ideally, you will want this number to fall somewhere close to the middle of the system's operating range.
I recommend using a tongue weight scale like the etrailer # e99044 to verify your trailer's loaded tongue weight, as if it is loaded and ready for a trip.
I have attached a link that will take you to our available selection of weight distribution systems that allow backing up with your trailer, along with an FAQ article on the subject that you might find helpful.
